Well, this is where I come in.

get help understanding your web design needsSo what makes me so special and an expert in this field? I have been involved in technology and web design since I was in college, about 20 years now. I have worked with TONS of non-profits and companies all over from Dallas to Ventura County in California. Just like anything else, it takes a lot of work and planning. If you search for web designers in your area, without a doubt, there will be a million to choose from.

How do I decide?

There are some quick and easy steps to help find the best designer for you. Here are some tips:

  • Review their digital portfolio. Yes, they MUST HAVE a website. If a designer doesn’t have a website where you can learn about them and see their work, then that should be your red flag. You need to be able to look at what they’ve done.
  • Technology. How do they build out their sites? This is going to be VERY IMPORTANT for you as a client. Once the project is finished, you need to be able to easily update the site. Open-source content management systems are going to be your best bet. Make sure they are building sites in programs like WordPress and Joomla. Stay away from CMS that are not open-source like DotNetNuke or a system “they built”. Reason being is that if they are not open-source, it may be hard to keep the site updated or it may be costly to expand it. Open-source is really the only way to go.
  • Talk to them. Get a vibe for their personality and hear straight from the horses mouth what they can and can’t do. Nothing worse than working with a designer/developer that you don’t have good communication with.

Do they have to live in my town?

The short answer is no. With the progress in technology today, virtual is the way many people work. You can easily have conference calls and conduct webinars to work out the details. Plus you may find that there may not be anyone qualified in your town to handle what you need. So don’t be alarmed if you live in Dallas but find a really good designer in Oklahoma City. This is not a show stopper. The qualifiers above should be what you look at. Location should not be the end all be all. Now there are some that feel very strongly about that. It’s a personal decision but it can work. Many of my clients aren’t even in my town. I have a client that’s on the East Coast and a completely different time zone and we made it work great.
